Lugh didn’t need to keep a hand on Julien to keep him in line as they walked the path from the house, and they both knew it. Julien wasn’t going to risk doing anything that might make them retaliate against Noah, and he was sure Lugh didn’t think of him as any kind of a threat. They both followed the servant down a winding path that led from the back of the enormous house through the back garden, the light from the house growing dimmer the farther they went.

At the far back end of the garden sat a stone entrance to what looked like a cellar. The servant pulled the heavy doors open and led the way down the dark staircase into the ground. Julien followed despite the wariness in his gut, and Lugh brought up the rear. The blue lanterns were farther apart down here, keeping the stone corridor dark and damp. When they reached a short row of small cells barred with silver, the servant unlocked the one deepest in the cellar with a key from the heavy ring on his belt, and Lugh unceremoniously lifted Julien’s bag from the hunter’s shoulder and dropped it to the ground at his feet.

“Any other weapons?” Lugh asked flatly as he stared down at him, clearly not even entertaining the possibility that Julien would lie to him.

“Be thankful you’re getting to stay at all,” Lugh said. He pushed Julien into the cell with one firm hand and shut the barred door behind him, allowing the servant to lock it again. “My father would have been within his rights to kill you. He still may.”

“What are they going to do with Noah?”

“Make sure he stays alive until they can perform the reversal spell, probably,” Lugh shrugged. “Once that’s done, they’ll decide what to do with you. You really should have stayed behind.”

“You mean they’ll decide what to do with us,” Julien clarified. He stepped forward to grip the silver gate with his good hand.

Lugh gave a quiet scoff. “If the witch survives, I suppose, yes.”

Julien’s heart sank into his stomach. Had he brought Noah right to a certain death? “Why wouldn’t he survive? What are they going to do to him?”

“He has my father’s magic in him,” Lugh answered. “Getting it out again isn’t going to be easy on him. It’s been days already, and a Tuath Dé’s spirit is strong. The longer it takes, the tighter the hold it will have on your little witch.”

Julien fought not to sway on his feet. He’d known there would be risk involved in whatever they
